While browsing through digital point forums, I came across an interesting post. I thought to check if I did it right by starting a web directory. According to the post, following are the points for which you should NOT start a web directory.

so here goes:

Every statement on this list should be followed by…YOU should NOT start a web directory.

1. If you bought a dropped domain name just because it had pagerank, and now you don’t know how to recover the money you wasted…

2. If your directory domain name is related to another industry, for example “encephalopathy-mesothelioma.info”…

3. If you think it would be cool to clean up your site by removing template sponsor/developer credits…

4. If you have ever asked the question “Where can I find a category dump?”…

5. If you already calculated how much it will cost to list the directory for sale at SitePoint…

6. If the statement “New High PR Directory” makes sense to you…

7. If you use framesets to spread your PR over every page of the directory…

8. If you have ever asked the question “How can I bulk approve submissions?”…

9. If you use the Pagerank Prediction tool religiously every hour, on the hour…

10. If you take an existing directory name and just add a hyphen, then steal the logo and try to pass it off as the original. for example “emporium-directory.dumb”…

<lol>I found that I had not a single intention to start a web directory that is listed above, so think this should be used as a directory start up tool </lol>

How to get high search engine ranking position? This is one of the major concerns for new webmasters or for new websites. As it is always recommended by google to have more number of organic visitors, SERPs does matter a lot. So how to get high SERP with a relative less website/blog age?

Tricks:
There are a few tricks that you can follow to get high SERP via some other websites. What I am trying to convey is, when you are sure that the content you are writing is of high quality, it ins’t a bad idea to give out some share of organic traffic to someone else. For e.g. Social bookmarking sites like Digg.com does have good PR, high traffic rank & reputation. So why not to use it?

Whenever someone puts a term to search in google, its algorithm does some of the following things:

1) Search for a website with high PR having this search term
2) Search for a website with relatively low PR but high keyword density for specified search term
3) Decide which result to display from above mentioned two options

As Digg.com satisfies option 1, google will try to search the mentioned term on Digg. Here, you have to be sure about that post that your are submitting to Digg.com does have the keywords. However, don’t stuff titles with keywords. So if google find a keyword on Digg.com, it simply displayes it in result. Thereby you get a high SERP through Digg.com. So what if you have to share your organic traffic with Digg. It surely does makes a sense. isn’t it?

So even if your site is relatively new & doesn’t have high SERP, you can still get a good chunk of organic traffic as well SREP and you can be sure then after a while your SERPs will improve drastically as this method is a part of white SEO.

Following are the set of a few websites, article directories & social bookmarking sites that you can use to get high SERPs.

* Digg.com
* goarticles.com
* propeller.com
* dropjack.com

The reason I have mentioned few bookmakring sites is that, Digg.com is just enough to get you good SERP. It doesn’t matter if you dont’t submit your site to other bookmarking sites. However, it is recommended to add it to at least 3-4 bookmarking sites. But for my site, Digg actually did the trick.

I hope this post helps you to get good organic traffic.

@Edit: Here is the proof. I started this blog a few days ago, and I am on 3rd position for term “How to get high search ranking position”

Fisrt thing that a new webmaster sets to do after launching a website is to look for a web directory and submit a site. Even I followed this appraoch when I started with webdevelopment. That was the time when I used to spend long hours on the internet submitting my site to the all possible directories. However, the question is, are these web directories still usefull?

I would take my example here. 28th March 2008 was when I started my website. By July 2008 my site had a PR 3. For sure this was a result of some good SEO and surely I can not deny the share of webdirectories.

I would suggests to web masters that do not just go on a spree of submitting your site into loads of directories. Try getting a directory which has some niche or which is not largely populated. There is a good chance of your link getting accepted, that too quickly. Also there is a chance that you would get a PR juice flowing to your site.

However, I will still emphasize that having a good PR is not everything that you should care for. Try generating organic traffic if you want users to visit your site often. Try to write good quality content. Do not copy contents from other sites. Although this will not ban you from google, but users will have bad experience on your site. Afterall, users are the one for whom you created the site & content. Isn’t it? Don’t run after the money only. Think you you can deliver good content to the users & make them to visit your site again.

Hope you liked the post.
